Back in June I had the honor of representing PinMart as a Gold Sponsor in the Battle of the Bags Cornhole Tournament for Jelessa Oats. My husband is a Temple Terrace Firefighter/Paramedic and Jelessa is the daughter of fellow Temple Terrace Firefighter/Paramedic Jesse Oats. On March 10, 2018 Jelessa was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). Watch her story: here.
Unaware of what AML was I decided to do some research. AML is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow — the spongy tissue inside bones where blood cells are made. The word “acute” in acute myelogenous denotes the disease’s rapid progression. It’s called myelogenous leukemia because it affects a group of white blood cells called the myeloid cells, which normally develop into the various types of mature blood cells, such a red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Jelessa is currently seeking alternative treatments; IV high dose Vitamin C and Oxygen therapies. These treatments however are unfortunately not covered by insurance yet they have been proven to significantly strengthen one’s body to fight the disease. Firefighters are always there for us yet they are also very much so there for one another. The news of Jelessa’s diagnosis prompted the Temple Terrace Firefighters Benevolent to host a cornhole tournament on June 2, 2018 to help raise money to cover the expense of her alternative treatments. A special thanks is due to Temple Terrace Firefighters Benevolent members David Burton and Enrique “Rick” Santos for their tireless efforts in organizing the tournament. The tournament was held at Fuzzy’s Taco Shop in Tampa, Florida. The weather that day was absolute perfection. It was a great turnout! Myself along with three others formed Team PinMart. The day was filled with love and laughter and a sense of camaraderie as we weren’t there to compete we were there to show our support for a young girl who is well deserving of it all. In end, a little over $11,500 was raised thanks to sponsors, donations and 15% of that day’s sales from Fuzzy’s Taco Shop. It was an absolute honor to represent PinMart at the Battle of the Bags Cornhole Tournament for Jelessa. If you would like to learn more about Jelessa and want to support her fight a Go Fund Me page has been created.
