This week my area has been suffering widespread blackouts due to summer storms. Going without electricity made me realize just how much we rely on natural resources in order to survive in the 21st century. We need energy not only to make our lives livable, but productive and comfortable. At the same time, these resources are finite and need to be used more efficiently. Which lead me to wonder “how”?
Apparently, switching to high-efficiency faucets and showerheads can decrease water usage by up to 35%. Also, using floor and ceiling fans can cool a room by up to five degrees while using far less energy than your air conditioner. And of course weather stripping helps keep the inside temp in and outside elements out, which can save hundreds of dollars over the course of the year in energy costs.
It took a rolling blackout to get me thinking hard about this important concept, but what about simply wearing an ECO Green Pin? Just wearing a pin could get everyone you come in contact with thinking about their carbon footprint and how to reduce it. Getting a few to give to friends or coworkers to help spread the word has an even bigger impact. Start your own local environmental revolution! Can wearing a lapel pin for environmental awareness help?
